Plaza de Toros

At the end of Sep. 2023 I attended a bullfight in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Here is a link to the rated G photos with others below.

I went in order to experience a cultural practice that is very foreign to me. I came away, ironically, with even less understanding, which is not meant as a backhanded insult but rather was the truth of the matter. I knew, of course, that this involved killing the bulls but I was not expecting harm to horses as well as intentional harm to humans who would stand defenseless in front of the bulls and be run down. I simply do not understand this practice.

Bullfighting was imported to Mexico by the Spanish many centuries ago (which is evidenced by the specific fancy attire and theatrical elements) and is what I imagine certain practices of the Roman Colosseum were like long before that. It is currently practiced in a number of countries that are mainly Spanish and Portuguese speaking and including, to my surprise, France.

Importantly, I was raised in a culture where this is not practiced but where US football and boxing are celebrated and the comparisons are not that far off as all are violence as sport where physical damage to participants is common, expected & debilitating. These are all things that are gladitorial in nature that I simply do not understand but I mention them to make others aware that those who live in cultural glass houses should not throw stones; there are many Mexicans who have mixed or negative feelings about this practice just as others elsewhere have about their own cultural practices.

Fui para experimentar una práctica cultural que me resulta muy extraña. Irónicamente, salí con aún menos comprensión, lo que no pretende ser un insulto ambiguo, sino más bien la verdad del asunto. Sabía, por supuesto, que esto implicaba matar a los toros, pero no esperaba dañar a los caballos, así como daño intencional a los humanos que se quedarían indefensos frente a los toros y serían atropellados. Simplemente no entiendo esta práctica.

Las corridas de toros fueron importadas a México por los españoles hace muchos siglos (lo que se evidencia en la vestimenta elegante y los elementos teatrales específicos) y es lo que imagino que eran ciertas prácticas del Coliseo Romano mucho antes. Actualmente se practica en varios países de habla principalmente española y portuguesa, entre ellos, para mi sorpresa, Francia.

Es importante destacar que crecí en una cultura donde esto no se practica pero donde el fútbol y el boxeo estadounidenses se celebran y las comparaciones no están tan lejos, ya que todos son violencia como deporte donde el daño físico a los participantes es común, esperado y debilitante. Todas estas son cosas de naturaleza gladiadora que simplemente no entiendo, pero las menciono para que otros tomen conciencia de que quienes viven en casas culturales de cristal no deben tirar piedras; Hay muchos mexicanos que tienen sentimientos encontrados o negativos acerca de esta práctica, al igual que otros en otros lugares tienen acerca de sus propias prácticas culturales.
